Surveying Cotswold Stone Properties

Much of Witney’s older housing is built from Cotswold limestone, often with stone slate or thatched roofing. These are handsome buildings, but they behave differently from modern construction and need to be assessed on their own terms.

Solid stone walls have no cavity, so damp moves through them differently than in a modern cavity wall. Lime mortar, which most of these properties were originally built with, allows the structure to breathe. Where cement mortar or modern impermeable paint has been used in past repairs, moisture can become trapped and cause problems that are easy to misread. Stone slate roofs are heavy, and the timbers beneath them are worth close attention on any property of this age.
